Verse I -- Luke 4:4 ; Deuteronomy 8:3, 10, 17-18 ; Romans 6:18
By bread alone, is man to live?
Nay by Thy word, shall he endure.
And for Thy purpose wilt Thou give--
That ne’er can man himself insure.
Thou givest not for mortal need,
But for Thy glory settest free.
From day to day how Thou dost feed--
For daily portions, bless we Thee.
Verse II -- Luke 4:5-8 ; Matthew 6:24 ; Ecclesiastes
At Satan’s feet, is man to bow?
At riches, power, mirth to bend?
Nay all our praise deservest Thou;
For things of Earth will swiftly end.
None serveth masters twain with heart:
So Thou, O God, must be our Lord.
For all is vain from Thee apart;
And serving Thee is our reward.
Verse III -- Luke 4:9-12 ; Psalm 91 ; Romans 6:1-7
To sinful depths, is man to dive?
That Thou shouldst fain deliver all?
While in Thy grace we daily thrive,
As servants we shall heed Thy call.
To tempt Thee, Lord, Thy sacrifice!
Refrain us from this sinful vice!
Baptized into the death of Christ,
We part from death to walk in life.
