He Loved Me though I Hated Him

A hymn of grace

February 18, 2023 Anno Domini

Verse 1 - Romans 3:9-12, 5:8, Hebrews 4:14-16
He loved me though I hated him:
He hanged upon a tree;
While I was dead for all my guilt,
He even bled for me.

And ev’ry day, though freed from sin,
I still am prone to flee
From him, who called me from my chains;
And yet he comes for me.

Verse 2 - Romans 3:20, 5:8, John 1:10-13, 3:20
No action of my doing earns
The love he has for me.
For while I walked an evil step,
He died to set me free.

The darkness hid my guilt and shame
And there I burned with lust.
But God called me a son and made
Me new and named me just.

Verse 3 - 1 John 2:1-11, Romans 6:1-4
I know that I abide in God,
If love abides in me,
And if I keep his holy word
That sets the sinner free.

For being baptized into Christ,
From sin I ought to flee!
But when I walk the sinner’s step,
He advocates for me.

Verse 4 - Philippians 2:5-8, Romans 3:10, 5:8, 8:29
The God of all creation came
To die upon a tree.
I was no better than a thief;
And yet he bled for me.

And ev’ry day, though still I sin,
He makes me more to be
As Jesus, Lord, the perfect man,
And pardons even me.
